In India, a woman is diagnosed with breast cancer every four minutes. This shocking fact now has a simple preventive mechanism. The earlier the risk of breast cancer is deduced, the sooner the road to recovery. Dr. Reji Jose and Dr. Paul Augustine, a doctor couple, have devised a risk calculator after conducting an extensive study on the usefulness of the Gail model in estimating the risk for development of breast cancer in the women of Kerala. First, they measured the sensitivity of the Gail model among women in Kerala, for a sample size that included those who had been diagnosed with breast cancer and those who hadn’t been diagnosed. Based on the results, the couple formed seven parameters that would determine the presence of the risk. Dr. Reji Jose is a Professor of Community Medicine at Sree Gokulam Medical College and Dr. Paul Augustine, an alumnus of the 1983 batch, is the Head of Division of Surgical Oncology at Regional Cancer Centre (RCC).
A great round of applause to these two doctors on their achievement.
