Smt. Cecilia Roma Joesph

from Arun Joseph's FB page:

It is with profound sadness, we announce the death of my mum Cecilia Roma Joseph, born on May 23 1935. I am going to write this as a short obituary as a number of people who have messaged me with condolences have asked. My mum, she was superb doer, reformer, educationalist and in a small way a hard-working philanthropist. She will be remembered for being a wonderful and loving mum by her children…my siblings Roy Joseph (1957-2012), Maria Hall, Tony Joseph and Augustine Joseph and by her many, many successful foster children, especially by ‘Kuttan’ who is a brilliant footballer who has played for some of the top clubs in Calcutta football league, India.

She was a much liked teacher both at Loyola School Trivandrum from 1971 to 1976, and at her own school, St Josephs primary from 1978 - 1995, Tvm- 8. For 30 years 1985 to 2015, she will be fondly remembered by thousands of families from Trivandrum’s coastal communities, Christian, Hindu and Muslim for giving school uniforms and books to more than 15,000 school going children with her own money and with funds she raised from her family. Even in her 80’s she used to give free English lessons to nursing students taking TOEFL and many whom will remember her warm hearted efforts to guide them to success. She will also be remembered by hundreds of children, many of them now adults for the Tuesday evening Unniyappam distributed at Valiathura and Cheriathura churches for St.Antony’s poor for 52 weeks for some 40 odd years. Many older women in coastal Trivandrum will remember for her generosity in providing a secure roof over their heads, beds to sleep on, free meals and medicine.

She was for a brief period involved in politics, as a Local Congress-I President for the coastal ward and for some time as the General Secretary of Kerala State Mahila Congress. She was also for some years the founding President and then secretary of Kerala State Women’s football Association.

She will be missed by her surviving siblings, Nova Thomas, Fort Kochi, Aloysius D’Cruz, Bandra, Mumbai, Dr. Susheela Abraham,Kochi, Robin D‘Cruz, Diamond District, Bangalore, Pamela Lopez, Kairali Nagar, Trivandrum, and Meena Roberts, Vyetilla, Kochi.

Details about her funeral from my brother Tony, Bangalore. It is an exceptionally sad and grief filled day for me. Thank you for the WhatsApp condolence messages

May her soul rest in peace.
